What Can You Legally Make With a Copper Still? Water, Essential Oils, Fuel, and the Permits Involved

Short answer first: yes, it is legal to own a copper still in the United States. The thing to watch is what you run through it. Distillation itself is plain lab work. You heat a liquid, the vapor rises into copper, and it cools back into something cleaner than what you started with. Whether you need a permit depends on what ends up in your collection jar.

This guide is organized as lists so you can scan it. First is what you can make and which permits apply. After that are copper stills sorted by use, size, budget, and heat source. At the bottom you can sign up for sale alerts.

Is It Legal to Own a Copper Still?

Yes. Under federal law you can buy, own, and display a copper still. Lots of people keep one on a bar shelf as decor, and plenty more use one for jobs that have nothing to do with drinking. The line is crossed when you distill alcohol. That takes federal authorization from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), and the rules differ depending on whether the alcohol is fuel or spirits.

State and local rules sit on top of the federal ones, and some states are stricter about owning or using a still. Check your own state before you fire anything up.

What You Can Make: The Legal List

1. Distilled Water

This is the simplest experiment and a good first run. You boil water, catch the steam, and leave minerals and dissolved solids behind in the pot. It teaches you how your still heats, how fast the vapor moves, and how your condenser holds up, all without anything you need a permit for.

2. Essential Oils and Hydrosols

Steam distillation of plants is old chemistry. Lavender, mint, rosemary, citrus peel, and cedar all give up aromatic oils when steam passes through them. You collect the oil along with a fragrant floral water called a hydrosol. When you are not making alcohol, this is a craft that rewards patience and careful heat control. Copper is a big part of its long history.

3. Fuel Alcohol (Permit Required)

Ethanol for engines, generators, or heating is a legitimate use, but you need permission before you start. The TTB issues Alcohol Fuel Plant permits for producing fuel alcohol. Get the permit first and follow its terms exactly, including the rule that fuel alcohol must be made unfit for drinking.

4. Distilled Spirits (Federal Permit Required)

Federal law does not let you make whiskey, brandy, or any other drinking spirit at home for personal use without a permit. Producing spirits requires a federal distilled spirits permit and has to comply with state law as well. If you plan to go pro, a still that matches your target batch size belongs in your business plan from the start.

Whatever you run, you are responsible for following federal, state, and local law.

Kit or Complete?

The EZ KIT models are do-it-yourself builds that you solder together. They suit someone who wants to know every seam on the still. The complete units come ready to use. Either way you get hand-built American copper.
