If you picture an old-time copper still, this is probably what you see. It has a pot, a thumper, and a worm, and it comes complete. The 6 Gallon Complete Copper Still is the traditional setup on our mid-size list. It's for people who want the whole classic process in one piece of equipment.
Where it lands on our lists
- By size: Mid-size. A 6 gallon pot is a big step up from the small starter stills.
- By budget: $500 to $750. It starts at $699.
- By setup: Complete, with both a thumper and a worm.
Why the thumper and worm matter
Each part adds a stage you can control. The thumper sits between the pot and the condenser. Vapor bubbles through it and gets distilled one more time on the way through, which is where the name comes from. The worm is the coiled copper condenser where vapor cools back into liquid. Heat in the pot, a second pass in the thumper, and cooling in the coil each give you something to adjust. That's the old alchemy, and you're the one at the controls.
Who it suits
It's a good fit if you've outgrown a small pot, or if you'd rather skip the starter stage and buy one complete setup. The listing doesn't name a heat source, so call the shop at 603-997-6786 if that decides it for you.
Owning a still is legal in the US. Copper stills are also used for water and essential oils. Distilling alcohol requires a federal TTB permit, and you must follow federal, state, and local law.
